From now until Sunday, May 24th, submit your item concepts to this thread by commenting below. The Kano Creative Team will pick their favourite based on how well it meets the submission criteria, as well as how fun and interesting it would be to make.

The winner will see their entry added into the game as a powerful Limited Quantity item, get a free one for their inventory, and receive a package of 50 Favor Points!

Submission criteria are below. Please read them carefully, as the rules have changed since the last contest!

Entries that follow the criteria carefully will have a much better shot at winning. Entries that ignore the criteria will be disqualified and may even be removed from the thread.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA

This is a visual design contest! What we want from you is the kind of information we would include in the work order that is given to our illustrator when we need an image created.

Item creation is a technical as well as a creative process. The idea is to give the artist clear and descriptive information about what the item should look like, without them having to pore over a novel’s worth of text.

Your submission MUST include:

• A name for your item that is under 25 characters long.
• The type of item (Weapon, Matey or Ship)
• A description of the item’s appearance that is under 400 characters long.

The most important part of your submission is the description. Remember, you have limited space and the illustrator is first and foremost concerned with key visual elements. Think about how you can best specify the shapes, colors, and textures of the image you have in mind.

OTHER RULES

Stick to one single item submission per post, please! You can post more than once if you wish, but please don’t spam the thread or your entries may be removed.

In the past, we’ve allowed participants to include images with their entries. Not this time! We’re looking for interesting concepts straight from your own imagination, so you’re going to have to do this one without visual aids. Entries that include pictures will be disqualified.

Keep the game’s theme in mind! While we do make some exceptions, don’t be surprised if submissions of giant alien robots don’t gain a lot of traction with our illustrators when they’re looking to make gear for swashbuckling pirates.

EXAMPLE SUBMISSION

Name: Narwhal Lance
Type: Weapon
Description: A long weapon resembling the jousting lances used in tournaments in the Middle Ages. The pointed shaft is made from a narwhal tusk, a long twisting tooth resembling a unicorn horn, that widens into a bell-shaped guard. The grip is plain and unadorned. The entire weapon is made of the same material, an aged ivory, which is smooth but not glossy, and appears to have some brown discoloration in the cracks and grooves.

Type:Ship
Description:"Endeavour" from Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Black mast , purple sails with a triple black skull. The outer bottom half of the deck is surrounded by a crimson mist.

Name: The Dark Lady
Type: Ship
Description: A frigate-type hull, dark gray and weathered, with 3 masts. The sails are aged, stained and tattered, as though the ship has been through a savage storm. At the top of the center mast flies a Jolly Roger. Some gun ports are open, others are missing doors. A black anchor hangs near the bow. A bowsprit of a leering woman in a faded red gown, leaning forward, right arm extended and holding a lantern.

 

Name: Captain Silver Skull
Type: Matey
A ghostly apparition of a skeletal pirate. Still wearing his worn and ripped clothes. He floats in the air with glowing eyes and there is a silver haze surrounding him. He carries a long sabre with a ornate skull handle. He is always endlessly sailing the 7 seas looking for his lost treasure or new lost souls to add to his crew. Forever searching. Forever hunting. Forever cursed.

 

Mayflower of Mutant shrimp=(ship)...(matey)= Mutant Shrimp ....weapon= CAN'O Hushpuppies (cannon shoots hushpuppies or fish..shrimp/mutant shrimp, whatever lol)

 

awe man well guess part 3 of captains quack story is not going to be an acepted submission, 400 characters isnt enough to tell a story.

Name: The Iron Maiden
Type: Ship
Description: With the Maiden herself at the helm, this ship is not to be messed with. The vicious pointed metal spikes makes for dangerous combat when met head on with enemy ships and general defence from outside intruders. The black mast with the head of "The Iron One" spells danger for all who oppose.

 

Name: Sea Urchin
Type: Matey
Colour palette: Blue, gold, grey and milky white
Hair: To be based on the sea urchin, all spiked and dark at the roots getting lighter toward the tips.
Face: Heart shaped with almond shaped dark eyes looking impish
Body type: Slender
Clothes simple at the top with ragged floating ribbons instead of a skirt, to emulate jelly fish tentacles.
Character: Impish, mischievous and useful to cause havoc during battle.

 

Name: Black Heart
Type: Weapon
Description: Self-explanatory. An actual heart that is jet black. Legend has it that it strikes fear into your enemies, resulting in an increase in attack strength.

 

Name: Stiletto Lass
Type: Matey
Description: Because you can never have enough lasses on your crew! A lady wearing a pirate-themed one-piece mini-dress, complete with a pirate hat and thigh-high leather boots with stiletto heels.

 

Name: Maynard's Revenge
Type: Ship
Description: A 42-gun fifth-rate warship in honor of Maynard's defeat of our dear friend Blackbeard.

 

Name: Exploding Albatross
Type: Weapon
Description: The death of an albatross brings bad luck to ships and the salty seadogs aboard, especially if it explodes in flames directly above the mast like an ornithological guided missile. An albatross shaped explosion of feathers and flames atop the masthead.

Attack heavier.

 

Name: The Ancient Mariner
Type: Matey
Description: A bedraggled and bearded wraith, in rags and wearing a pendant made of albatross bones. Trapped in a half-life and doomed to wander the seven seas for all eternity.

Attack and defence even.

 

Name: The Ghostly Hulk
Type: Ship
Description: Captained by Death himself, flying a dice and crossbones flag signifying the dice that he gambles away the lives of the unlucky mariners he manages to trap. Half hidden by fog and able to surprise even the canniest of sailors.
Attack heavier.

 

Or the ship could be called the Coleridge? Dunno...

 

Name: Old Ribcage
Type: Ship
Description: Remnant of a ship that was blown apart in battle; only it's skeletal frame remains. She still roams the seas though and is said to be indestructible, thus guaranteeing a healthy amount of defense being added to a pirate's fleet if they are lucky enough to have Old Ribcage in it.

 

Name: Lobster Mistico
Type: Ship
Description: A three masted ship built for speed, but with giant iron lobster claws fitted to the bow to ram, disable and trap ships. As red as the shell on a lobster, and flying the skull and lobster claws flag, this fearsome vessel doesn't need to hide, it's awesome speed is inescapable. When this ship gets it's claws into you consider yourself pillaged, then sunk...

 

name- abyssal blade
type- weapon
description- centuries have past, mining corporations have settled down in a sought out place to be. Finally uncovering a a blade later to be known as the abyssal blade, a blade darker then night with a slight reddish glow from the victims who have fallen in its path years ago. Held only by the infamous pirate, Bartholomew Roberts better known as Black Bart.

type- captain
description- A man forced into piracy, yet rose through the ranks quickly to become a captain. Had one of the most formidable and notorious ships on the seas that would bring fear into the eyes of many just by uttering its name. Never kept with the same jolly roger, even in his final fight he had a clear opportunity to run but he stayed and fought til his death.

 

name: Opium War Matey
type: matey
An Englishman mate who, with the support of the Crown, subjugates weak willed sailors. Armed with his pipe and sacks of his wares he forces those who fall into his trap to sail with him.
