I have seen the ? mark banner + I have a chieftain with a ? too. How did they do that?

 

If a player has a question mark on their portrait that means that they did not select a character at the beginning. It's rare since there are benefits to having a character and if you don't pick one, then you're missing out.

 

Ok, but when I created a guild of my own I had to select one of the flags and I couldn't skip that page until I did so and a ? mark was not one of the choices. Do some people have a trick to override that?

 

When you create a Guild don't pick a flag, and it will have a question mark banner when you finish.

 

nevermind, I just played around with creating a guild and I got the ? banner with my new guild. COOL!

 

Are there direct benefits for an armada, if the leader picks Buccaneer over Privateer (or vice versa)?

 

Nope, those are just for "flavor" right now.
