Factions - Do I need One?

I've been away over the last few weeks and seen that factions have come into the game in a big way. I have several offers to join factions but most seem in response to me beating someone in a fight.

My question is, will I need a faction in the future to help me in the game or is this just intended as an additional part of the game that you can play if you want to? Will I be hindered down the line for not joining a decent faction now?

I'm level 345 now and for the most part can fend for myself, so other than 'faction wars' what is the point in them? This is why I suspect they will be used for other parts of the game in the future and I don't want to be left behind......

Other than the social aspect I have yet to see any use for it so far. I guess it's a easy place to ask for help for fights and stuff *shrug*

Yes, Factions will play a bigger part in the future. The ranking will not only be based around wars and battles, Factions can also rank up based on helping, performing outbreaks and boss fights. More info to come soon!

  4. I'm curious, how does this effect a player such as myself who has always stayed out of factions opting instead to stand on my own.

Seeing my Friends Messages, I am often reminded of the wisdom of this choice.

Will I need to miraculously find/start a faction that fits my particular set of game play etiquette?

as far as i have seen factions are useless, considering the fact that you can attack people in your own faction and allied factions, whats the point of making an alliance or having people in your faction if it's a free for all anyway?

I agree, I have seen supposed allies attack me multiple times for nothing other than my association with another player they didnt like.

  7. As callous as this may sound. Did you send add requests to the members of your faction's allies prior to these attacks? Or did you ask them to request you? Were you on the hitlist at the time?

On other apps that have unofficial factions, a common saying has become "If you're not in my (squad/guild/clan/mob/whatever/ect/ect) you're fair game. Also, many consider anyone on the hitlist, as fair game ally or not.

The reason I've steered clear of factions is because of the drama I've seen unfold within them over the past few years of online apps.

Most notably what I personally call the "Vortex of Shame" it goes something like this:

Player A attacks somebody they have no business attacking, and either because they lose the attack or the target retaliates, whines to Player B.
Player B informs Player A that they are on their own for getting themselves into a mess they should have known better than to get themselves into.
Player A then whines to Player C getting Player C to abuse Player B for "Not supporting their (whatever)".

this also applies if/when Player B complies with Player A's request.

I never liked the idea of being at the beck and call of somebody else, and prefer to choose my own battles.

That, and I dislike being denied targets due to politics, I'm an equal opportunity attacker, I attack anyone that shows me green :D
