Fight boss alone, or get help? How do you do it?

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by LeEoftheMountains, Oct 2, 2010.

  1. Sup everyone. I'm just seeing how everyones thinking is on this.

    A. Do you fight a boss all by yourself picking up all the random drops, and getting a mass amount of experience at the end. Which takes up a lot of stamina and time thus you cannot help others to get the helper award, and cannot really battle because you are too busy fighting a boss.

    OR

    B. Ask for help right away and get a bunch of people in on the boss and get it defeated and over with quickly?

Just picking everyones wooden teeth on the subject.

  2. my answer is this

considering my level and that theres only 1 on my fight list for now(2 more are climbing fast and will be in range so ill have 3)and i cant beat him unless boosting up 32-37% with still only a 50-50 shot,i take bosses alone.

asking for help advantages and disadvantages as i see it

advantage:you get the boss dead quickly(hopefully)and youve possibly helped others get some exp and items.

disadvantage:some like to get all the power attacks unlocked and if someone hits too hard the boss owner most likely will declan and list the hard hitting player(s)ive seen this done way too many times.also if you actually manage to get the full amount in the boss, total exp in the end has shrunk down.

thats just my take on this.im sure others will have other opinions.

I always fight the bosses alone. I don't see the point having them dead quicker but there's no rush to earn the achievements from killing them at level 5 and 10.

Instead all the experience goes to me and I level up faster and get stronger faster.

  4. There are a few ways to look at the bosses.

    1) try and spread the wealth and limit people to x number of attacks.

    2) keep all the xp for yourself.

    3) do what damage you can, but then open up your boss to be killed as soon as possible.

Now, what method you choose is based on your game play. For example some people want their friends to get bonuses. Some people don't care and post their boss because they just want it killed. Now there is a point in the game at which you gain maximum experience from attacking a boss and one point in which you are just wasting your energy. This happens because a boss either has too high a health, or the level of the boss you are attacking just is too powerful.

For example I can get upwards of 250 xp from some bosses, but on some that are very high level 10+ cursed pirate and beyond... I can only get 100-130xp per attack. So at that point it makes no sense for me to use my own stamina when someone more powerful might get better xp and would want to kill my boss. So when I post my boss it is generally because I just want it killed. Now bosses like turtles and sharks, I get max xp so I do one or two a week so I can keep gaining max xp from my attacks. I do not let other people attack those bosses.

Now a previous poster said they don't ever post and there is no hurry. That is fne until you realize you gain better xp helping someone who gives you better xp as a boss battle bonus and per attack. If you keep doing that, you will eventually fall behind others who help as needed and request help when their bosses grow too powerful. Also, there is an advantage to killing boss 1-10 as quickly as possible. The faster you get those points, the quicker you can use those points to add to your attributes. You may gain more xp from battles or you may have more stamina to attack with. Whatevr you do, having more skill points is never a disadvantage.

What i do is open my boss, waste all my stamina on the boss until 20 (for fights) and then ask for help and leave a message saying "do at least 100,000 dmg" because most people just do min damage for drops

I generally fight them on my own. However if I am running out of time then I will ask for help.

When starting out, I would position myself with half my XP filled before starting a boss battle. That way I would go up during the battle & finish him off in one set. My record is 34 sec start to finish.
Now the bosses are coming faster than I can keep up with. I open it up with a friend or two on chat so we all hit it hard, score points & don't leave it around for others to pirate.
If I now leave one open overnight because I just don't have enough to finish him, I let people do what damage they want. If I didn't want them to finish it, I souldn't have opened it up.
When I assist in someone elses boss, I use 20 to 40 stam then get out. If their battle runs long, I can come back to help. I don't worry about drops, just XP. I do check to see if they they set a limit or minimum.

    if I need the points, i go it alone;

if there are items I want, as a helper to someone else- I make a token effort, to get he desired item
    (same for my bosses)-

    it's advantageous to help a number of others, if the items awarded are important to me;
it's similarly useful to finish my bosses quickly, if the primary item really matters to me.

if I simply want to level up, I'll pour a bunch into a particular boss battle, or into several.

That's what I do. Depending on the time of day, I can actually blow through 400+ stamina merely meeting the minimum damage requirements for helper drops. When I need to dump my stamina, I go and kill off any bosses with too much health for 1/2 day left.
For bosses with desirable drops (Hydra and Parasite mainly) I copy the link to my Armada and a few friends known for obeying set damage limits. Since the Random drops aren't as good, I know that helping in as many bosses as possible gets you better equipment than only sticking with a couple of bosses.
But then some of clan refuse to accept this explanation and pitch a major hissy fit when my bluff is called. InMyHumbleOpinion, if a boss has 5 million health and I set the damage limit at 800,000 MAXIMUM per player, that is more than reasonable. Also reasonable is my threat (temporary declan and a bounty or two) for going over that limit. More than one player has done several million damage and then accuse me of cheating when they are punished as warned.

    So my question is this:
when you have a boss that drops great equipment, do you set damage limits? And is my punishment, the single bounty and declan for a few days, is that punishment harsh/unfair?
Yesterday, a player tracked me through Facebook and started yelling at me for posting limits on every boss that I share. I was under the impression that the damage limit setting wasn't THAT uncommon, especially for high leveled players trying to max out their boss helpers.

  10. Why choose just one way?
I do both. I have built my stamina up to where I can defeat the lower level bosses fairly easily and quickly. I also have enough to where I can do a significant amount of damage to the upper level ones, thus putting myself safely at the top of the list when I ask for help. In other words, I get the lion's share of the points and the rewards, and those that help get a pretty fair share themselves. If I am needing to level up quickly, without battle or helping another player, I work alone. Also, I think it's just good game etiquette to allow your clan to help you if you've jumped in to help them. Ask for help and let them decide if they want to.
When I help someone, I try to be respectful of that player, and try not to put up more damage than they have, after all, I am only there to help THEM kill the boss, and help THEM gain whatever drop they will get, not to further myself at their expense. Lots of players don't look at it that way however. They will go in and defeat the boss with no regard to whoever put it up.

If you want to be on the leaderboard for bosses, then you have to open them up for others to help.

If you want to kill the upper level bosses, you most likely will need help. For instance, my last Pirate took all 40 captains, including some of the top players and it still took 14 hours to kill. Some of my clan will not even touch my bosses because they do not do enough damage nor get enough rewards. If I was to try to kill my Pirate myself, I would get defeated. I would spend all my stamina on it and not get any levels so I could not refill.

I do like asking for help so that my clan can benefit from the boss. If it gets killed quickly then great! I have never been mad about someone killing my boss and that is why I am on top of the leaderboard for bosses (at least for now). I get benefit from my clan killing my boss quickly as I get the rewards for my part in it faster. Getting the unlocks on a boss does not help out in any way. You always need half the total to get the first unlock and all of them for the second unlock. It is not a formula of how many unlocks you have as some might think. You will do more damage per power attack with the unlocks so that is nice, but if you are going for experience or drops or whatever, then you don't want the power attacks to do more damage (so you can get in more hits, getting more of everything).
Now that you have gamer points, it is better to offer your boss for your armada so that they can get points faster. Not everyone has a boss available at all times.
Lower level bosses should be killed quickly so you get the achievements for killing the level 1,5,10 of that boss. If you try to do this by yourself, you are not getting those achievements and the bonus with them as fast as you could.

But if you aren't shooting for the XP and favor point rewards as a primary goal, if you are trying to share the boss for HELPER DROPS and hoping that your clan does the same...that is using the bosses to get better equipment.

My only problem is when players ignore what the boss owner says. Like you said, some of your clan don't join because they can't do as much damage and want to leave the spot open for the heavy hitters. In that case, you would NOT want a player to join, hit once or twice, and then leave the boss alone.
It is the same as someone coming in when my boss is not even 5 minutes old and quickly killing it before anyone can do any damage. That player is going against what the boss owner wants.

Bubba, what would you do if someone joined your super-powered Pirate Boss and did a single 1 Stamina attack when you were trying to kill it as quickly as possible?
I'm not arguing about the best use for a boss, just saying that players should respect what the boss owner wants for the boss. If you want a very strong boss killed quickly, then players should only join if they are willing to pour Stamina into it to kill it. If you are sharing the boss with clan because it drops good loot, then players should only join to do the minimum damage for a drop and then leave the boss alone so others can get the drop?
Am I making sense? Is my point coming across clearly?

  13. yes bubba your bosses are extremely tough.some of em i can have full stam refill it empty it again and still not kill the thing.

i also agree with level 1-10 bosses should get killed quickly so achievements are reached.why have unlocks on those critical 3 when you know theres a chance of not beating it in time.

overall i agree with you on everything you just said.

the RARE times i open my bosses i always say kill.if i say unlocks then im just looking to see who pays attention lol.

Well, I usually do my bosses alone to get tons of Boss Drop Items. My character is also built to be a Boss Killer. I pile the items up, and it usually takes me 2 days to kill my largest bosses. (Sea Hydra). Barnacle Beasts are not yet so strong that it takes 2 days to kill them.

I seldom share a boss, it's either a present to my Armada or I feel unnaturally generous.

I try to ask for help but keep fighting because if you're in a viking guild or pirate armade you have to get Game Points every day for helping other clan members

Helping with quests and Gambits/Challenges is another way.
The *best* way is to send gifts.
You need to send 5 gifts. You CAN send at most 10. And since we all *want* those gifts because they are Blacksmith ingredients...
